About Crosby URC...

In the Past

Crosby Congregational Church was formed in 1885 to serve the growing population of Blundellsands and Great Crosby. Plans were drawn up for a church building and schoolrooms but due to financial constraints only the schoolroom, the present hall, was furnished as a church with seating for 300 people. Over the next 10 years the church grew and, when congregations of between 200 and 300 were the norm, it was decided that it was time to build what is now the present church.

The foundation stone was laid on 22nd May 1897 by Mr A Brown Paton, a member of the church, and the first service in the church's new home was held on 15th September 1898.

In 1972, the Congregational and Presbyterian Churches united to form the United Reformed Church.

At a church meeting on the 22nd October 1918 it was decided to grant permission to dance to the men.

The proposal to extend this to include ladies of the congregation was not accepted!

NB: Things have changed since then!!

In the Present

Today, the administration, worship, and life of Crosby URC reflects its rich heritage.

We baptise both children and adults as a means of entry into both the wider universal church and the local congregation.

Children play an important part in the life of the church and in helping us to discover more of God. During each service, we spend 25 minutes together before the children leave for their own time of worship together. A creche is available for the very young.

Together, the minister and elders of the church are charged with the pastoral oversight of the church, whilst all members accept the responsibility for the mission of the church.

The worship of the church is firmly based around an acceptance of the Bible as the living word of God.

The congregation express their gratitude to God through the singing of hymns and songs, both ancient and modem, helped by an organ and music group. We learn together through the preaching of God's word and we draw strength through the prayers we offer to God.

For many in the church the sacrament of Holy Communion,

where we remember the Last Supper of our Lord Jesus Christ, when he broke bread to symbolise the breaking of his body, and shared wine

to symbolise the offering of his life for all,

is the occasion when they sense God close. The holy meal of communion is open to all who love the Lord. Children prepare to join in communion in the first year of their attendance at Secondary School.

In all this our aim is simple:

To praise God, to explore God, and to help others to discover the joy of faith in God.
