Aims For The Future

To be faithful to God.

To continue to tell people about the love of God.

To show the love of God in our life as a church.

Beavers

Diane Mawdsley

Beavers are a Scout based organisation which we hope will be of benefit to both the children and the Church. We meet in the Mayflower Room on Monday nights from 6.00pm to 7.15pm. At present we have 16 children on our roll and are fully booked until September 2002.

The Beavers enhance our Church life by their Church Parades and taking part in the services. I believe the Church members enjoy these parades as much as the Beavers.

Junior Church

Janet Worrall

Junior church has continued to grow over the past year. Children have taken a greater part in the services which has been very popular with the congregation.

Our Christingle was better attended last Christmas when it was changed to morning rather than afternoon.

Rita ensures we have wonderful displays of work done by Junior Church on the boards in the hall; I hope people take time to look at them.

Junior Church would not exist without the dedication and commitment of its staff. Rita, Vera and myself have worked closely together as a team; from September a new team is to be formed.

Vera is retiring in July and she will be very much missed. Vera originally came to help me in Junior Church as I was on my own taking all ages. Vera is very popular with her young group, and over the last few years has given herself completely to Junior Church, I personally want to say a big thank you to Vera.

At present Vera takes the 3-5 age group, I take the 5-7's, and Rita the over 8's. Jenny Wild and Liz Hall have taken the occasional classes. We did have a helpers rota to assist leaders in Junior Church, but it fell apart slightly due to various reasons. If there is anyone who is willing to come into Junior Church every so often to help the leaders please see me or Rita.

We are still looking for more Junior Church leaders, so that no one person is out of the service every week. Liz, Diane and Ruth hope to join the team from September.

A Rota is to be set up for the over 12's to have a separate group as their needs are different as they approach their teenage years.

I am leaving at the end of August. I have loved every minute of my time with Junior Church. As we can teach the children, we also learn from them, as their faith and knowledge grows, so also does ours. I am looking forward, as I am sure Vera is, to being able to receive Communion on a regular basis rather than just on special occasions as it has been in the past. Please remember Junior church in your prayers as we look forward to the future. Pray for the leaders, the children and the helpers.

Enrichment Group

Margaret Yates

We are a group of up to 14, with an average attendance of 9 to 10, who meet once a fortnight, to study the Bible or subjects connected therewith. Meetings are held in the homes of members, and volunteers offer to lead the discussions for which we have study books to assist whose who are prepared to lead.

We started the year in September on Prayer and subjects ranged from Genesis in the Old Testament, dealing with Abraham conversing with God, to Timothy in the New Testament, dealing with Paul exhorting the Ephesians to pray for everyone.

At the start of this year we decided to study Paul's book to the Romans and at the time of this report is still ongoing. The last meeting before the summer recess is to be held on 20th June.

We are not a closed group and we are always most pleased to welcome anyone who would like to join us.

Ladies' Fellowship

Jean Wethered

Ladies Fellowship meets fortnightly on Wednesday at 2pm in the Coffee Bar.

Dates are always in the Messenger. We basically meet for 'Tea and Chat', but we do discuss topics of the day. Having a speaker is an expensive business these days. We aim to give moral and physical support wherever needed. If all members turn up we are fourteen in total, having acquired three new members this year. We pay a subscription to our treasurer and support chosen charities. In 2000 they were Dr Barnardo, Compass and hearing dogs for the Deaf. We also subscribed to Thorton Hall in memory of the husband of one of our members, and contributed to the Church Gift Day.

In the past we enjoyed having lunch together periodically and have started this practice up again. Twelve of us met at Plumleys on the 23rd May for an enjoyable lunch.

New members are always welcome.

Mill Group

This year will be remembered by all of us as the year in which we lost our great friend Ann Daw. Ann never missed our meetings. We greatly appreciated her quite wisdom and company and we all valued her friendship. The loss of one amongst so few is keenly felt and we find our meetings the poorer without Ann.

There are just over a handful of us; we meet on Mondays, in the evening, once a month in one another's homes. We commence with a short prayer and then we spend approximately 45mins discussing topics, or listening, before we have a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.

This year we spent one meeting listening to Jenny as she told us more about Christian Aid week and other initiatives designed to make people more aware of the work. On another evening we brought along our favourite pieces of poetry or prose and told one another the reasons for our choice. Last months meeting was a musical one and what a great evening! We enjoyed listening to the CDs and tapes which we had brought along and the varied reasons for the choices. We all enjoy sharing a meal together so this year we had two such feasts, one at a local restaurant and the other cooked and served at home by Dot which was wonderful.

We are always ready to welcome any new members so do come along if you would like to join us. Our meetings are advertised in the Messenger.

Pram Club

Louise Pimm

The Pram Club has once again had another very busy year. The number of members has fluctuated up and down from week to week but generally around 20 mums and children have attended. The offers of help in the running of the club are few and far between, most mums want to relax and chat with their friends.

We have been able to buy new toys, jigsaws and mats.

The children have particularly enjoyed the craft table where each week a different activity is arranged with the much appreciated help of Rita Griffiths. Rita also leads the singing at the end of each session on the majority of occasions.

We will be going on a trip to Gulliver's World again this year at the request of some of the members who enjoyed the day out last year.

We will be having our usual end of term party on the 19th July 2001 and have asked Kindermusic to come and hold a session for the children. I'm sure the afternoon will end with a bang.

Total profit raised since last year: £234.51. (Similar to last year: £233.93.)

2. Current situation:

The volunteers are:

Maggie Potter

Joyce McCormack

Ann Rawsthorne

Edna Astbury

Vera Robinson

Sylvia Hanley

Elspeth Yule

Joan Ryder

Christine Harrison

I would like to thank them all for their continued commitment and enthusiasm. If anyone else would like to volunteer either to help make it a five week rota, or offer themselves for cover for holidays, illnesses, etc, please contact me. The volunteers always work in pairs.

I believe that the coffee bar serves the best value cuppa in Crosby. It would be lovely to see it used even more. Perhaps members of the congregation can think of some friends who don't know about it, but who would like to use it.

Storykeepers

Rita Griffiths

The Storykeepers is a children's club, for Church children only, which is run on most Sundays from 12 noon to I .00pm.

The theme is always based on a Bible story, and the format of the Club includes Bible notes, prayer, themed games, Bible craft and lunch.

Approximately 15 children attend the Club each week, and their parent's (and anyone else) are invited to stay for a simple lunch in the Coffee bar during the Club time.

As from May 2001, different adults have taken over the responsibility for preparing and leading different areas within Storykeepers.

I would personally like to thank Janet, Ruth, Lynn, Cathy, Diane, Liz, Wendy and Sarah for all of their support and commitment.

The children who attend really enjoy the club; my own vision of it for the future that it will be used as a form of outreach for un-churched children. Why keep something good to ourselves?

Veterans Club

E. Schofield

First I would like to thank the Church, on behalf of all Club members, for the continued provision of all the facilities required for the Club to operate. These are very much appreciated by all members.

The Club has had another successful year although attendances were down on last year due mainly to illness and also we lost two very active members who died during the year. Membership now stands at 20 and we have three vacancies which we shall fill by the end of the bowling season in September.

Club activities are mainly snooker with members sitting out playing cards if they wish.

We have one day out during the year in August when we go to Mere Brow Sports and Social Club near Southport. Here there are two full-size snooker tables and a bowling green. This event has proved popular in the past and we are going again on August 24th 2001.

We also held our usual Christmas party when refreshments were provided by members and we organised a special snooker type competition.

As to the future, we hope to continue as we are now. We do not wish to increase the membership further as we think it would be counter productive.

Young Mums

Janet Worrall

Young Mums have continued to meet once a month on a Wednesday morning for a cup of tea and a chat.

We are a very informal group and anyone would be welcome to come along. Quite often we eat lots of cakes.

Numbers vary but we have a few regulars, it doesn't matter if you don't have children. We would like to see more mixed ages getting together.

Young Mums (still need name changing) is a great way to know people and make friends. Over the past year, a mum from Vermont Nursery and a young mum, with two children, new to the area have joined us.
